The Virginian-Pilot Joy Fund is a non-profit charity that provides toys for underprivileged children in Hampton Roads during the holidays. Last year alone, The Joy Fund helped bring smiles to more than 19,000 youngsters in need. To purchase the thousands of gifts, The Joy Fund must work 12 months out of the year.

Started in 1934 by Pilot editor Tom Hanes, The Joy Fund has grown into one of the area’s most respected and significant providers of holiday support for the needy. The Joy Fund works with public schools and social service agencies to identify children in need. Every penny of your donation is used to purchase new toys. The Virginian-Pilot pays all administrative costs. The Salvation Army assists The Joy Fund in the distribution of the toys.
